Let me start by defining what I mean by culture. Culture is the beliefs and behaviors of a particular group of people; the total of inherited ideas, values, and knowledge, which constitute a shared base. (Dictionary.Com).
The traditional denominational church is a building where people gather for worship and other religious services; a gathering of Christians who adhere to certain beliefs and creeds, who submit to ecclesiastical human authority, and a certain space that regulate the conduct of its people.
The traditional denominational church is not the church that Jesus declared and is currently building in Matthew 16:18.
The Church has been a cornerstone of American culture for centuries, providing a sanctuary for worship, community, and empowerment throughout the nation. However, the Church is being hurt by the American culture in several ways, which are damaging to its members and the community as a whole.
One way that the Church is being hurt by American culture is through the increasing secularization of society. As more people turn away from faith in God and spirituality, churches of all denominations are experiencing declining membership and attendance. The Barna report has been statistically showing a decline since the 1990s.
Furthermore, the rise of individualism and consumer culture in America has also affected the Church. The emphasis on personal success, wealth, and material possessions has eroded the communal values that are central to the Church's mission. Many members of the Church feel pressure to conform to these cultural norms and prioritize individualistic pursuits over collective empowerment.
Another way that the Church is being hurt by American culture is through the persistent politics that continue to polarize Americans. The Church should be a voice for justice and equality, advocating for human rights and social change. However, the church’s message of achieving true equality and justice for all Americans is perverted by political interests.
Moreover, the Church is facing internal challenges, including financial instability, leadership struggles, and generational divides. These issues are not unique to the Church, but they are exacerbated by the cultural pressures and inequalities that affect religious communities.
In conclusion, the Church is being hurt by the American culture in several ways, and these challenges threaten its ability to fulfill its mission of going into all the world making disciples for Jesus, serving the community, and promoting the justice of God.
