These generations are actively shaping narratives, breaking down barriers, and leaving an enduring legacy of resilience, creativity, and progress.
In this article, we explore the lives of inspiring Black heroes who were born in Gen X and Gen Y and are currently making history.
Ava DuVernay, born in 1972, has made significant strides in the film industry, becoming a trailblazer for Black filmmakers. With works like "Selma" (2014) and "13th" (2016), DuVernay addresses systemic issues of race and justice. Through her production company, ARRAY, she provides a platform for underrepresented voices. DuVernay's impact extends to her efforts in reshaping Hollywood's landscape, advocating for diversity and inclusion.
Ta-Nehisi Coates, born in 1975, is a critically acclaimed writer and journalist whose works delve into the complexities of race in America. His groundbreaking book "Between the World and Me" (2015) offers a poignant exploration of being Black in the United States. Coates's intellectual contributions resonate with Generation X and Y, sparking important conversations about identity, history, and the ongoing struggle for racial justice.
Viola Davis, born 1965, is an accomplished actress who has received critical acclaim for her roles, including her historic Oscar win for Best Supporting Actress in "Fences" (2016). Tristan Walker, born in 1984, As the founder and CEO of Walker & Company Brands, Tristan Walker has focused on creating grooming and beauty products that cater to the specific needs of people of color. He co-founded Code2040, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating pathways for Black and Latinx individuals to succeed in the technology industry.
Brittany Packnett, born in 1984, is a social justice activist, educator, and writer who has dedicated her career to advancing racial equity and advocating for social change. As a co-founder of Campaign Zero, a platform focused on police reform and accountability, Packnett has been instrumental in driving conversations around systemic racism and police violence.
Amanda Gorman, born in 1998, gained international acclaim for her captivating and powerful poetry. As the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history, Gorman delivered an awe-inspiring recitation of her poem "The Hill We Climb" at the inauguration of President Joe Biden in January 2021.
